Welcome!

This is going to be a great 2012!

I started the New Year weighing over 260 pounds and feeling very sluggish. I knew that I needed to drop the weight as I had in 2010 when I dropped 50 pounds in 90 days with a very aggressive cardio program with EXTREME Spinning classes.

I prefered a less extreme program this year focused on nutrition and jump started the year by watching the following documentaries on Netflix for inspiration:

Fat Sick and Nearly Dead

100 pounds overweight, loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease, Joe Cross is at the end of his rope and the end of his hope. In the mirror he saw a 310lb man whose gut was bigger than a beach ball and a path laid out before him that wouldn't end well- with one foot already in the grave, the other wasn't far behind. FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD is an inspiring film that chronicles Joe's personal mission to regain his health.

I was very motivated by Joe's message and his personal success! SO I rushed out and bought a new blender and juicer to prepare for an exciting 2012.

In addition to Joe's life-changing message I discovered other very interesting movies on Netflix:

2009
NR
104 minutes
While most people saw the documentary Super Size Me as an exposé of the fast food industry, comedian and former health writer Tom Naughton saw it as a dare: He'd show that you could lose weight on a diet of burgers and fries. In addition to chronicling Naughton's weight drop, the film provides interviews with doctors, nutritionists and others to drive home his thesis that most of what we know about "healthy eating" is wrong.

Food Matters

"Let thy Food be thy Medicine and thy Medicine be thy Food." -- Hippocrates
2008
NR
77 minutes
With a staggering number of Americans suffering from obesity and other food-related maladies, this film takes a timely and hard-hitting look at how the food we eat is helping or hurting our health, and what we can do to live (and eat) better. Nutritionists, naturopaths, scientists, doctors, medical journalists and more weigh in on everything from using food as medicine to the value of organic food and the safety of the food we consume.

Focusing on the research of two food scientists, this earnest documentary reveals that despite broad advances in medical technology, the popularity of modern processed foods has led to epidemic rates of obesity, diabetes and other diseases.
Dr. Campbell, a nutritional scientist at Cornell University, was concerned in the late 1960′s with producing “high quality” animal protein to bring to the poor and malnourished areas of the third world. While in the Philippines, he made a life-changing discovery: the country’s wealthier children, who were consuming relatively high amounts of animal-based foods, were much more likely to get liver cancer. Dr. Esselstyn, a top surgeon and head of the Breast Cancer Task Force at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, found that many of the diseases he routinely treated were virtually unknown in parts of the world where animal-based foods were rarely consumed.

I was so impressed with Dr. Esseltyn's research and was surprised to find that his son is Rip Esseltyn the author of Engine 2 diet!

Forks Over Knives Presents: The Engine 2 Kitchen Rescue
2011
NR
52 minutes
Join Rip Esselstyn, former firefighter and author of the national best-selling The Engine 2 Diet, as he guides the White and Wally families through an "Engine 2 Kitchen Rescue." Watch Rip teach these families how to take control of their health.

After reviewing ALL this information I was determined to create a realistic fitness program that was nutrition focused instead of extreme cardio as in 2010.

I've never counted calories but I quickly discovered how easy the daily task is by using an AMAZING app on my Smartphone -

Lose weight the healthy way!

We believe — and medical studies prove — that the best way to lose weight and keep it off forever is to simply keep track of the foods you eat. Gimmicky machines and fad diets don't work, so we designed a free website and mobile apps that make calorie counting and food tracking easy.

I'm hooked! By keeping track of my calories consumed and my daily exercise starting January 26, 2012 I've successfully lost 9 pounds!

WOW!

I'm very impressed with the huge food database of over one million foods which makes it almost impossible to NOT find a food that you're eating. The recipe counter makes it so much easier to track the nutrition in homemade meals and the exercise tracker lets me see the amount of calories I've worked off for the day.

I'll be updating regularly to share my progress and my discoveries on my path to nutritional health and ideal weight.
